New Norcia
Today we drove to New Norcia – Australia’s only monastic
town.
We took a guided tour through the
town. The town was established in 1847
and is quite extensive, with school buildings, dormitories, church, flour mill,
bakery, machinery shop etc. The art work
was extensive. We heard one of the monks
play an amazing piano piece and also hear the pipe organ being played. The bricks of the buildings were made on site
by the monks, the wood hewn and carved for the pews etc. Really quite an
unusual but beautiful place. On our
return to the caravan park, the Turnbulls had arrived so we all caught up for
dinner and a chat for the grownups and play for the kids – wonderful!
