Perth City Sights
This morning we drove into the city and wandered the
streets. Hayden is so easy to spot as an
outsider because he spends the whole time looking up. We went shopping and bought a variety of
things – I got a new camera backpack (the strap on mine has worn through
completely – it has done fifteen years of hiking so I can’t complain),
replacement camera lens cap, new thongs, a new backpack for Hayden, books
(found a great second-hand book store) and Hayden bought himself some
lego.
We also went to The Bell Tower –
this has eighteen bells, twelve of which are 18th century bells from
the St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, London.
Here we explored the various levels of the tower – great views from the
top, watching the actual bells move and chime, watching and listening to the professional
bell chimers chime the bells for an hour, watch the gearing mechanism of the
clock work and chime the hour. The final
part, was being shown how to chime the bell and getting to chime the
bells. We each got to chime several
small bells (250kg) and chime one of the big bells (450kg).
We also walked to the Perth Mint and had a look around the display rooms, unfortunately they no longer make currency in Perth, so we were not able to watch this.
In the late afternoon, we took a drive around Kings Park – this park is
huge! Hayden spotted a great playground
that we will come back to another day if possible.
