12 November - The Sights of Fremantle

12 November 2016 – 195 037
The Sights of Fremantle

This morning we started the day with an amazing second-hand bookstore.  Both Drew and Hayden bought themselves books, I could have bought a hundred books and still not got everything I liked – too many options!  Our next stop was the Fremantle Markets – so many food and colours – Hayden even got to play a “street” piano!

After a picnic lunch, we walked to the Fremantle Prison and did two tours.
The first tour “Doing Time” took us through the prison, from when it was built by convicts in the 1850’s until it was closed in 1991.  Because the prison was in continual use until so recently it is an unusually well preserved convict building.  One section of cells has been modified to show the evolution of cells over the time periods.  The second tour “Great Escapes" showed us through the security used at the prison as well as successful and unsuccessful escape attempts.

We then drove to the Round House, however a wedding was in progress so we didn’t go in.
Our last stop for the day was the port area, we could look at the Leewin II tall ship that was in the docks – hard to imagine sailing for six months on the open sea in such a small vessel!
