Busselton Jetty
This morning we drove to Busselton – it took approximately an hour from where we are staying and I enjoyed the countryside we drove through.
Our first stop was the
Department of Parks and Wildlife, where I got more information on the Cape to
Cape Walk and short walks that can be done within it. We then headed down to the waterfront, where
they are doing a lot of preparation for next weekends Ironman, as well as
redevelopment works, to Busselton jetty.
We rode the jetty train out to the end of the longest wooden piled jetty
in the southern hemisphere.
We then took
a tour of the Underwater Observatory –
this is a building with thick glass windows, that goes all the way down to the
ocean floor (only 8m even though the jetty is 1 841m long) and allows viewing
of the reef structures that have established themselves on the pylons and the
fish and other marine creatures that live under the jetty. I thought this was quite an amazing
view!
After catching the train back, we
enjoyed hot chips in the shade by the beach with the Turnbull’s. After lunch we had a swim – this is the
nicest beach for swimming we have encountered in Western Australia, and the
first non-freezing water since leaving Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo
Marine Park. We got to swim with
approximately twenty to thirty ladies in mermaid suits – not sure why?? We then walked out to the far end of the
jetty, where we snorkelled around the jetty pylons and fished (caught nothing,
but that doesn’t really matter). In no
time the end of the day had arrived and we had to head home.
