Porongurup National Park
This morning we packed down and drove north to Porongurup
National Park.
Our first walk was to the
Balancing Rock and the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock. The walk was challenging and enjoyable,
however the Skywalk itself was disappointing, although the climb to it, using
handholds was fun.
We then drove to the other section of the park and had a picnic lunch at Tree in the Rock picnic ground.
Our second walk of the day took
us past the Tree in the Rock – literally a full size tree growing in a crack in
the rock. The walk continued climbing to
Hayward Peak and then Nancy Peak and Morgans View – the views were fantastic,
particularly looking north to the Stirling Ranges where we will climb
tomorrow. This is the most overgrown
path we have encountered anywhere in Western Australia (and they are not big on
path maintenance), we could not even see the ground in spots for the foliage we
were pushing through. Just as
frustration was about to bubble over, we came across a team of Rangers pruning
the path, so much easier from there on.
The trail then descended again before climbing to the top of Devils
Slide – again with amazing views!
On the
way back to the car park, Hayden found a piece of climbing equipment on the
track and figured he would take it back to the car park and leave it on the
Ranger’s vehicle there. As we walked
into the car park, one of the Ranger’s was coming up the path to start looking
for it as they could not climb the next tree they needed to prune without it –
great timing and good observation by Hayden to spot it. We then drove north again, and have set up
camp at Moingup Springs in Stirling Range National Park.
