Bibbulmun Track Day 2 - Ball Creek Campsite to Helena and Waalegh Campsites

Darling Range Section of Bibbulmun Track

Last night was mild in temperature. We were up at 5:45am and left just after 7am. 

We walked through open woodland with wildflowers and plenty of small birds. Our views were limited by fog, which created a picturesque scene in the forest. It was very pleasant walking this morning. We arrived at Helena Campsite about 9:45am and enjoyed our morning tea. Helena is a very pretty campsite that we unfortunately won’t be staying at overnight due to timing.

After leaving Helena Campsite the forest became much more open and sun exposed. There was a very long ascent, followed by a very steep descent. The forecast rain had not arrived at midday, but the humidity was very high. The remainder of the hills between Helena and Waalegh Campsites were less steep in both ascent and descent. The clouds rolled in about 1pm and we had a few sprinkles of rain in the last fifteen minutes before we arrived at Waalegh Campsite. There was a considerable downpour just as we arrived. The temperature then fell rapidly, and it was cold and drizzly on and off throughout the afternoon.

In a respite from the rain, I explored the campsite and found a plaque that informed me that Waalegh means place of Wedge-tailed Eagle. Not long after we saw one soar up the valley – a beautiful coincidence.

Overnight we had the same people in camp, everyone staying in the shelter due to the weather.
