Alpine Way - Geehi to Talbingo (Snowy Mountains and Canberra Trip)

Friday 20 December - 280 067

After packing down again we headed north on the Alpine Way to the Murray 1 Power Station viewing area.  Unfortunately, there are no tours running, but it was still an impressive sight.  Khancoban was a tiny, but tidy town undergoing renovation of the shopping area.

Continuing north, our first walk was to Patons Hut.  The path was through lovely woodlands with dappled shade on the path. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/patons-hut-walking-track

Next up we set off for Round Mountain Hut – unfortunately our brains were affected by the 38 degree heat, and we forgot to check the directions.  So, we took a hot but pretty walk through the countryside.  On arriving back at the car and checking our directions we found we had gone within a few hundred metres of the hut, but not realised that it was not on Round Mountain Road, but a side road off this.  The side road was clearly marked with its name but did not indicate that this was the way to Round Mountain Hut.

We stopped in Cabramurra to make phone calls and book our Yarrangobilly Cave tours for tomorrow.  Cabramurra is a Snowy Hydro town, which looks very much like a military barracks. https://www.snowyhydro.com.au/our-scheme/visit-the-scheme/cabamurra-australias-highest-town/
Our planned campground at Bullocks Hill was pretty but very much a horse campground with horse manure everywhere – you literally had to check every step you took.  So, we drove on to Yarrangobilly Village campground – I liked this spot, but Drew and Hayden did not.  So, we drove on.  We have camped for the night at Jounama Creek Campground.
After setting up we had a delightful swim that got our body temperatures back down.  We fell asleep to the sound of the creek flowing past our camper.  Tomorrow I will need to do some research on the walks in this area as we are now camping in an area that I didn’t know we were going to spend time in.
