Blowering Dam, Warogong Sugarloaf and Tumut (Snowy Mountains and Canberra Trip)

Tuesday 24 December 2019 – 280 541

This morning we drove to Tumut and looked around this country town and bought some bread.  On the way back out of town Drew and Hayden picked tiny but delicious apricots and plums growing beside the road.

We visited Blowering Dam wall where the hydropower station was running and releasing water into the Tumut River.  The dam wall is amazingly high!

Today’s hike to Warogong Sugarloaf was short, 12km, but incredibly tough with steep gradients up and down. https://visitsnowyvalleys.com.au/listing/warogong-sugarloaf-walking-track/ We detoured to Bald Hill where we could see out over Blowering Resevoir.  There were some very pretty areas with wildflowers and grand trees. We saw several large mobs of Grey Kangaroo move off as we approached. At the top were great views over the Tumut Valley – it felt as if without the smoke the views would go on forever.    Unfortunately, Drew took a tumble and managed to get a large (approximately 5mm by 5mm by 20mm) splinter in his elbow.  This was amongst the toughest walks we have ever done.  When we finished my Garmin awarded a new badge “Toasty” for recording an activity when it was over 38 degrees – no wonder it felt tough!

We then drove to The Pines campground at Blowering Reservoir for a very late lunch and watched some of the water skiers out on this enormous body of water.

Then back to our campsite for a well-earned cool down in the creek.
