K'gari Great Walk Day 5

 Friday 26 June

We woke just before 6am. We both had a poor night’s sleep due to the weather. I was also so hungry during the night due to the inability to cook a proper dinner that I ate some lollies in the middle of the night. We heard a large tree come down during the night. This morning was overcast and windy. While we had breakfast we spread everything out like a Bedouin camp to dry. There was no-one else in the campsite last night.

We were packed up and away by 8am; a lot drier than we arrived but definitely not dry. There was a lot of birdsong at Lake Boomanjin at dawn. On our return walk the water crossings were noticeably deeper. Given we were not in soaking wet clothes this time we chose to strip down completely for the deepest crossing. We stopped for about 10 minutes at the lake shore to dry our feet, remove the bulk of the sand and put our boots on. We could hear some birds as we approached Lake Benaroon. We must have walked more up than I realised yesterday which was good today as there was more downhill than I had expected.

The sign just left of centre is the walking path - we chose to go slightly off track

We arrived at Central Station about 1:15pm. Again, we spread everything out to continue drying it. We took a walk along Wanggoolba Creek inland - the water is amazingly clear. There were a lot of small birds flitting about and singing - beautiful.
