Wild Rivers and Wall in the Wilderness

Sunday 11 January 2015

Goodbye to Strahan, stopping for a view from the water tower on the way out of town – photos cannot do this view justice.

We travelled along the Lyell Highway to Hobart.  We stopped at Nelson Falls for a short walk.  Next stop, was Donaghy’s Hills Lookout; a twenty minute walk took us up the hill to enjoy a great view of the Gordon-Franklin Wild Rivers National Park.  At the top we met a family of entomologists collecting flies – the lady was very happy and passionate to explain in detail to Hayden what she was doing and let him have a go with a spare net.  He loved it!!  Apparently he is going to sell all his Lego to buy a microscope ….I doubt it somehow, but we will see.

Lake St Clair was our next stop.  This is the southern (finishing) point of the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain.  Here we did a one and a half hour walk, including some along the shoreline of the lake.  Beautiful!! As the weather has been so “hot” (it is all relative) the water in the shallows was not even cold.  We also saw a wild echidna digging with its snout for ants – cool!

We drove through Derwent Bridge and visited “The Wall in the Wilderness” which is a collection of giant wood carving murals on 3m high by 1m wide panel of Huon pine.  Some of the carvings are finished, some are chiselled and ready to be sanded, some are at varying degrees of chiselling and some just sketched out.  This combination allows the viewer to see how the process of producing the final artwork is achieved.  It was truly beautiful and a massive capital investment on the part of the sculptor.

Then, the long drive to Hobart.  We are staying at Graham Court Apartments; the rooms are small but presented very well.
