05:30
(QLD time) – ALARM – out of bed, shower and AWAY
09:30
– arrived at the Brisbane Domestic Airport.
We lined up behind a queue of Queensland boys heading off to the
National Futsal Championships.
Next
stop security, we expected the metal plate in my wrist to go off, but it
didn’t. Drew however had to take off his
belt, and then his boots before getting through – apparently the metal eyelets
on his boots were triggering the alarm.
While we were waiting for Drew to get through the detector I was checked
over for explosives. We made it to the
departure gate at 10:00am with twenty-five minutes to spare.
Our
plane was scheduled to take off at 10:55, but was running late and didn’t take
off until about 11:30. This of course
gave nervous Hayden plenty of time to get more nervous. Hayden was quite anxious about the take-off
and about how the plane worked.
We
arrived safely in Melbourne at about 14:45 (Daylight Saving Time). We were met at the baggage carousels by our
driver “Selwyn”, who took us to the Mercure Albert Park in an extremely quiet
hybrid vehicle. We saw a large yellow
post sticking up diagonally across the road, which is apparently a piece of art
called the “Cheese Stick” by the locals.
After
check-in, the plan was to purchase some groceries at the supermarket and then
go for a run around Albert Park.
Courtesy of incorrect directions by hotel reception we spent ninety
minutes walking around looking for the supermarket. We finally arrived back at our room at 17:45;
so much for our run. We were all really
tired, so we ate dinner and went to bed, with the alarm once again set for
05:30.
