Relaxing in Hervey Bay

20 September 2017 - Relaxing in Hervey Bay

For our last morning we walked to the end of Hervey Bay's very long Old Jetty. We watched a young man wrestle with a fish that literally had his rod bent in half.  It eventually got away while he was attempting to gaff it.  Hayden enjoyed trying to fish with another boy he met, but had no luck today.
Time to go home.

Whale Watching in Hervey Bay

19 September 2017 - Whale Watching in Hervey Bay

An early start today for a whale watch tour.  There were an incredible number of whales in Hervey Bay.  While most were resting or feeding calves, we did have the opportunity to see tail flukes and fin slaps.  The more white on the under-side of a calf, the younger it is - apparently one calf we saw was less than a week old.  Most mother whales feed their calves on their side underwater, however some put their head on the sand and their tail pokes above the surface of the relatively shallow water in the bay.  It was a great trip, but I was very tired when we returned.

We had a late lunch and then headed to the Tourist Information Centre. We finished the day with a walk along The Esplanade before treating ourselves to hamburgers and chips for dinner.

Water Adventures in Hervey Bay

18 September 2017 - Water Adventures in Hervey Bay

This morning we left early and drove to Hervey Bay's Whale Bay Marina.  We were fitted out with snorkel gear and boarded the glass bottomed boat "Milbi" (local indigenous word for turtle).  We saw a variety of wildlife and snorkelled over coral.  We stopped at Round Island (which is triangular in shape) to explore.  The variety of plant forms, landscape and small marine life was fascinating - great if your child is an investigator (mine most definitely is)! We returned to the marina at the end of our satisfying adventure.
